Budget health insurance policies under fire

MPs from the right-wing VVD have called on the healthcare council to investigate the cheap health insurance premiums being charged by a handful of budget providers, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.

VVD parliamentarians say the cheap deals are undermining the concept of solidarity within the healthcare system by targeting specific categories of people.
‘Our healthcare system is based on solidarity. Everyone pays the same, whether young or old, rich or poor,’ MP Anne Mulder told the paper.
One of the policies under fire, Promovendum, focuses on graduates while Besured is aimed at students and young professionals. Besured’s basic fee is €89.90 per month, compared with around €110 for a normal policy.
The paper says people with degrees are less likely to make claims on their health insurance, allowing insurers to cut their fees.
