Christmas trees to cost more

The cost of a Christmas tree will be up between 5% and 10% on last year because of a shortage of suitable trees, news agency ANP reports on Tuesday.

Tree nursery Buurte Kwekerijen in Gelderland, one of the biggest Christmas tree producers in the country, says many Dutch growers stopped following the surge in cheaper tree imports from Denmark several years ago.
‘Many of them stopped planting new trees. But because it takes five or six years to produce a tree, the shortage will now hit us in our pockets,’ grower Gerrit Tessemaker told the news agency.
The average tree will cost between €20 and €25.
