Senate refuses to speed process ID law loophole closure

The senate has refused to deal with legislation reintroducing charges for ID cards as quickly as home office minister Piet Hein Donner would like, saying the measure needs careful handling.

Last week, Donner introduced legislation to reinstate charges for ID cards following a high court ruling which said fees are illegal. This is because the cards are of more importance to the state than the individual, the court said.
The ruling led to a flood of applications, and a financial setback for local councils.
The lower house of parliament will look at the legislation on Wednesday morning and the government’s PVV allies are expected to side with the ruling VVD and CDA to ensure its passage. Donner had wanted the upper house to pass the legislation next week.
However, senators have decided they have ‘fundamental questions’ about the new law which require ‘careful consideration’. The cabinet does not have a majority in the senate.
