Ministry starts flexible hours in selected schools

An experiment in flexible school hours will begin in seven schools when the new school year begins, the education ministry said on Thursday.

The seven schools are taking part in a pilot project during which teachers, parents and day care workers will jointly decide on school hours so that these fit the demands of the modern age.
They will be allowed the flexibility to spread school hours across the whole year, including the summer holiday.
The pilot will last for three years at the end of which education minister Marja van Bijsterveldt will use the results to modernise the law on school hours.
‘I’m aiming for a form of education that suits both families and schools,’ the minister says. ‘One where parents can better combine care for their children with their work.’
The schools taking part in the pilot are:
Laterna Magica, Amsterdam
Sterren school in Apeldoorn and Zevenaar
Paraplus school, Ede
Bikube, Hoofddorp
Casa school, Pijnacker
The School, Zandvoort
