Labour party makes ‘modern monarchy’ policy

The Labour party wants to limit the power of the monarch when prince Willem-Alexander becomes king but will still vote against a PVV motion to make the role ceremonial, the Volkskrant reports.

Labour says the new king should not be chairman of the Council of State or take part in the formation of a coalition cabinet or a cabinet crisis, thus making it a ‘modern monarchy’.
The PVV motion goes further, calling for the monarch to be removed from the role of head of the government. This goes too far says Labour and it will vote against the motion when parliament debates it next week.
A majority of MPs is expected to vote for the PVV motion. Only the ruling VVD and Christian Democrats and two minor Christian parties are against.
