Waiting lists for psychiatric assessment soar

The waiting time for the psychiatric assessment of crime suspects has risen to 23 weeks, nearly double the average wait over the past few years, Trouw reports on Friday.

The Pieter Baan centre is used by the public prosecution department to determine if suspects are suffering from particular mental conditions and are fit to stand trial.
Suspects spend seven weeks in the centre being assessed and it takes a further three or four months for the report to be completed. This means the entire process can take up to 11 months, leading to delayed trials.
‘We have had a lot of referrals recently and we only have 32 places,’ a spokesman told the paper.
