Little change in housing rents

The cost of renting a home in the non rent-controlled sector has barely changed since 2009, when prices fell 15%, according to research by housing platform Pararius.

Average rents in the second quarter of this year are almost the same as the first quarter and as a year ago, Pararius says.
However, in Amsterdam rents are up 3% and in The Hague 1.6%. By contrast, in Rotterdam, average rents have fallen 3% and in Utrecht 1.5%.
‘On the one hand, demand is increasing because more households are not able to buy a house, or do not dare to,’ says Pararius director Jasper de Groot. ‘On the other hand, the lack of movement in the housing market means more owners are renting out their properties rather than selling them.’
The average rent in the Netherlands is now €12.17 per square meter, compared with over €14.60 in January 2009.
The province of Noord-Holland remains the most expensive to rent a house, while Drente is cheapest.
