Former province executive ‘lied’ about business interests
A former Noord-Holland province executive under investigation for corruption kept quiet about being part owner of a consultancy which worked for the government, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday.
The paper says Ton Hooijmaijers was a shareholder in VDG Trajectmanagement, which won several contracts to advise ministries, provinces and local authorities about privatisation.
As a member of the VVD, Hooijmaijers was a strong supporter of privatisation and market forces. But he failed to declare his business interests, even when directly asked by civil servants, the paper says.
Noord-Holland province is now looking into whether he profited personally from any projects which he himself initiated. Until now, the investigation into Hooijmaijer’s business deals have focused on his property activities.
VDG was involved in at least two semi-privatiation projects for Noord-Holland, the paper says.
Hooimaijers resigned from the provincial executive in 2009 after it emerged the province had lost millions of euros in the Icesave scandal. The corruption investigation began last year.
