12-year-old mother to be put in foster care

The 12-year-old girl who gave birth to a healthy baby during a primary school trip is to be removed from her home in Groningen and placed with a foster family, news agency ANP reports.

The girl was 11 when she became pregnant and has refused to name the father. But according to social services the girl ‘may be in an unsafe environment’ at home. She and the baby are currently in hospital in Groningen.
The girl did not know she was pregnant and complained of heavy stomach cramps. The teachers escorting the primary school pupils realised what was happening and called an ambulance.
Police investigation
‘We do have young teenage mothers in the Netherlands but 12 years is very very young,’ Marie-Louise van Kleef, child social services director told the news agency.
The agency has asked the police to start a formal investigation. ‘It is not clear if the adults in this story have played a role. That is why we have asked the police to look into the adults,’ she said.
According to the Telegraaf, the girl’s father has a conviction for abusing an older sister.
