Volkskrant: World Cup is running on oil and gas

Oil and gas will be the main sponsors now Russia and Qatar have been chosen to host the football world championship tournaments of 2018 and 2022, writes Mark van Driel in de Volkskrant.

Thanks to their mineral wealth, both countries have billions to spend on the construction of state-of-the-art stadiums and the infra structure that goes with them.
By electing the two least democratic countries from a list of nine candidates, Fifa has once again drawn attention to its tarnished reputation. Over the last weeks a number officials have been at the centre of allegations of corruption.
Sponsor deals
From a leaked McKinsey report commissioned by Fifa, it emerged last Tuesday that England and The United States would be the countries best able to organise the event. Fifa would also stand to generate the most income from these countries from ticket sales, sponsor deals and transmission rights. Russia was named as the fourth most likely candidate for 2018 while Qatar came fourth out of a list of five candidates for 2022.
But when it came to the vote the odds had changed significantly. The autocratic countries had suddenly become the favourites. After round two Russia found itself with 13 of the 22 votes. England was out in the first round with only two votes.
Qatar came out on top after four rounds with 14 votes out of 22 while the US had to make do with 8. Fifa will probably defend its choice by pointing out that football has to reach new audiences and that east and middle European countries have never organised a world championship before. Qatar, which has less than a million inhabitants, is the smallest country ever to host the event.
Putin
President Putin never denied that he lobbied hard to get the world championships to Russia. He did the same for the 2014 Winter games. He has promised Fifa to do away with visas for the time of the championships so football tourism isn’t obstructed.
It is unclear how Qatar managed to endear itself to Fifa. The desert state has always been keen on attracting events and hosted the Asian games although the blistering heat – 50 degrees in summer – would seem an insuperable barrier for the World Cup.
Qatar has said the stadiums will be completely air conditioned and that it will use solar energy to bring down temperatures to at least 27 degrees.
Compact
The Qatar world championships will be the most compact ever. The stadiums will all be within a 25 kilometre radius. The newly built stadiums will be taken to pieces afterwards and given to poorer countries. Islamic law will be adjusted so European fans will be able to drink alcohol in designated areas.
