Heavy snow showers bringing between 5cm and 7cm on Friday afternoon are likely to disrupt the evening rush hour in northern and central parts of the country, weather forecasters warned.

The snow is set to move in from the west from early afternoon and will reduce visibility considerably on the roads, the KNMI said. Slow moving traffic means longer tailbacks.

Motoring organisation ANWB recommends motorists leave their offices earlier in an effort to beat the worst of the snow and to spread the traffic.
The KNMI says Friday afternoon’s snow is set to be much heavier than Monday’s when the evening traffic jam reached a record 880 km. ‘It is not clear how long the snow will continue to fall,’ a KNMI spokeman told news agency ANP.
Freezing temperatures at night are expected to cause icy conditions on many roads, despite gritting. Slippery roads will be a particular problem in Brabant, the ANWB said.
More snow is expected on Saturday, followed by black ice.
