Evening rush hour starts early as motorists try to avoid more snow

Snow and freezing temperatures led to heavy traffic congestion on many roads on Thursday afternoon as motorists began the journey home earlier than normal

More people are using their cars because of the freezing temperatures and drivers on affected roads reduced their speeds, adding to the traffic slow down, the ANWB said. The A58 in the south west is particularly badly affected, the motoring organisation said.
The KMNI weather bureau is expecting more snow to fall in the west of the country in the early evening. More snow showers are expected overnight.
Breakdowns
Yesterday, ABWB mechanics were called out to help some 7,000 drivers with motoring problems, twice the daily average. The organisation has put extra staff on call on Thursday.
At Schiphol airport, passengers are being warned that some fights may be delayed or cancelled because of weather difficulties elsewhere in Europe.
There are no problems reported on the trains so far.
