VVD in senate to vote against Sunday trading restrictions
The 14 senators from the governing VVD plan to vote against their party when changes to the Sunday trading laws come up for debate, the Telegraaf reports.
The minority VVD CDA government has agreed to go ahead with plans to tighten up Sunday shopping rules which were introduced by the previous government.
The measure is being seen as a gesture to the fundamentalist Christian group SGP, which has two seats in the lower house and could be crucial.
The VVD was previously opposed to any restrictions.
Tourists
At the moment, shops in areas which are deemed tourist centres can open every Sunday. But the government wants to close that loophole and restrict Sunday shopping in most places to 12 days a year by tightening the definition of tourist areas.
A VVD spokesman told the Telegraaf that the senators will vote against because of the ‘legal imperfections’ in the amendment.
Supporters of greater restrictions still have a majority in the senate but vote will be close, the paper says.
