Safety fears ahead of pro and anti-Wilders demonstrations

Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan has called on demonstrators who plan to rally for and against anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders on October 30th not to let the event degenerate into a riot, the Parool reports on Monday.

The extreme right-wing English Defence League has applied for permission to stage a demonstration on the city’s Museumplein in support of Wilders, who is currently on trial on charges of inciting discrimination and hatred of Muslims.
A number of anti-racist groups have now said they will demonstrate on the same day.
A spokesman for the city council said the mayor and police are looking at how best to ensure the demonstrations remain peaceful. One option being considered is to stage the demonstrations at different locations or times, he said.
