Opposition parties criticise arts, culture spending cuts

Opposition parties on Friday launched their first campaign against the new government, attacking plans to slash spending on the arts and culture.

The Socialist Party, PvdA (Labour) and Liberal democrats D66 took part in a demonstration in The Hague to kick off the campaign. The demo was organised by students at the conservatory in The Hague.
‘I cannot believe that there is no one in the CDA, VVD or even the PVV who realises the value of the arts,’ said PvdA MP Jetta Klijnsma, referring to the make-up of the new cabinet.
Cultural institutions are also angry at the government’s plans to put up value-added tax on theatre shows to 19% while leaving it a 6% for sports events.
