New cabinet will back training mission to Afghanistan

The new right-wing cabinet is in favour of sending a training mission to Afghanistan and will put the proposal to parliament, according to press reports on Friday.

The proposal will take into account the motion sent to the European Union by the green party GroenLinks and the left-wing liberals D66 for a civilian police mission to support their Afghan colleagues.
Both government parties VVD and Christian Democrats supported the motion, but reserved the right to send soldiers with the mission to protect the trainers.
GroenLinks is against the idea because it will give the mission a military character.
It was the military mission to Uruzgan that caused the fall of the previous cabinet in February 2010, when a majority in parliament voted to pull out.
Since then, Nato and the Americans have been putting pressure on the Netherlands to send police trainers to Afghanistan.
