Criticism of male-dominated cabinet grows
More voices have been added to the mounting criticism of the Netherlands’ new male dominated cabinet, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Tuesday.
Just three of the 12 full cabinet ministers are female and none of the six junior ministers so far are women. Two junior posts still have to be allocated. And so far, none of the ministers have an ethnic background.
The paper points out that the new coalition agreement ends the current practice of making specific efforts to get more women and ethnic minorities into senior positions.
‘Selection will take place on merit,’ the coalition agreement states.
Sybilla Dekker, a former minister and chairwoman of the diversity network Talent naar de Top said the cabinet make-up ‘does not send out a good message to industry’. Dekker is a member of the VVD.
On Monday, European Commissioner Neelie Kroes, also a VVD supporter, called for a quota system so the government could set an example.
A number of prominent Christian Democrat women are also unhappy with the male bias, the paper says. Tineke Lodders, former CDA deputy chairman, said party leader Maxime Verhagen had not done his job properly by failing to nominate enough women to cabinet positions.
Women account for 41% of the 150 seats in parliament
