College was lax about ‘slow track’ degrees

Higher education college InHolland made it too easy for long-term students at the media and entertainment faculty to graduate with a full diploma, a committee set up to investigate the claims said on Thursday.

The claims that some slow students were being offered fast-track ways to finish their degrees, even though they have not completed their course work, first emerged in July.
Universities and hbo colleges lose out on funding if students drop out before completing their degree.
The committee, led by former Maastricht mayor Gerd Leers, said the management board was unaware of the situation and financial motives were not involved.
Caretaker education minister Marja van Bijsterveld said the committee’s conclusions were worrying. ‘I expect the board to take immediate action to get things in order,’ she told the Telegraaf. ‘The quality of education must be above all else. This is totally unacceptable.’
The paper says the education inspectorate has launched a second investigation.
