MPs call for speed limit increase

A majority of MPs wants caretaker transport minister Camiel Eurlings to investigate putting up the maximum speed limit to at least 130 kph on some roads, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday.

The paper says the VVD Liberals, Christian Democrats and anti-Islam PVV have welcomed the minister’s decision to increase the speed limit on part of the busy A2 and are urging him to do more.
The maximum speed on the 10-lane stretches of the A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht has been increased from 100 kph to 120 kph at certain times of the day.
VVD MP Charlie Aptroot says the minister should now look at other roads where flexible speed limits can be introduced, such as parts of the A4 heading to The Hague. ‘People do not keep to the proper speed limit because it is unreasonable,’ he told the paper.
The three parties backing the increase have a majority of one in the lower house of parliament and are currently in talks on forming a new government.
