Cabinet talks to take two more weeks

Talks on forming a new minority government will take at least another two weeks, cabinet negotiator Ivo Opstelten said on Friday evening.

The Christian Democrats, right-wing VVD Liberals and anti-Islam PVV have been in negotiations for three weeks and insiders had suggested an agreement could be sealed in the next few days.
Opstelten himself had suggested at the beginning that the process would take ‘roughly three weeks’.
However, Opstelten now says there are still ‘a couple of obstacles’ to be cleared. It is about reaching a good agreement, not meeting deadlines, he told reporters. It will be ‘ready when it is ready’, the former Rotterdam mayor said.
The three parties are drawing up an agreement for a minority CDA VVD government which will be supported by the PVV in terms of economic policy. They have agreed to slash spending by €18bn over the next four years.
