The Netherlands lose World Cup final after extra time

Spain won the World Cup final against the Netherlands 1-0 on Sunday night in extra time.

The match finished 90 minutes plus injury time on 0-0, forcing the game into an extra 30 minutes.
It was a bad-tempered match which saw the Dutch squad pick up nine yellow cards and Spain five. Johnny Heitinga’s second yellow saw the Netherlands down to 10 men.
After the game, Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk criticised referee Howard Webb. ‘I don’t think the referee controlled the match well,’ Van Marwijk said.
‘Both sides committed fouls. That may be regrettable for a final. But the best team won the match.’
Arjen Robben missed the Netherlands’ two best chances of the match, which both came from one-on-ones with goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
