Dutch coach Van Marwijk regrets hard man image
Dutch football coach Bert van Marwijk said on Tuesday he was sorry that Sunday’s World Cup final had led to heavy criticism of the Dutch team’s aggressive approach, particularly by the foreign press.
‘That does not apply to me or to our team,’ Van Marwijk was quoted as saying by news agency ANP.
Van Marwijk said he had not yet had time to watch the match again. ‘There were a couple of unhappy moments but from the bench I did not see such extremes,’ the coach said.
He earlier criticised the English referee Howard Webb for failing to control the game.
Positive
The Netherlands was given nine yellow and one red card during the final. Spain was given five.
Midfielder Mark van Bommel said the team needed to focus on the positive side of their performance. ‘It is a shame, and typically Dutch, not to do so,’ he said.
The Dutch lost 1-0 in extra time to Spain in Sunday’s final, the third time the country has lost the title match.
