Seven ‘bird collisions’ at Schiphol last year
Birds were involved in seven airplane engine problems at Schiphol airport last year, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.
A Royal Air Maroc plane was forced to make an emergency landing at the airport on Sunday night after colliding with a number of large birds.
In particular, large groups of geese cause problems around the airport and a number of measures have been taken to reduce the nuisance, the paper said.
The airport now employs 16 people whose job is to keep the runways clear of birds, 24 hours a day. Noord-Holland province has also begun a pilot project to shoot birds and shake their eggs so they don’t hatch.
