Pre-school childcare costs to rise in 2011
The cost of a place in a daycare centre for pre-school children will rise €21 for minimum income households next year and up to €54 a month for better off families, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.
The caretaker cabinet is reducing the amount of government subsidy paid to daycare centres as part of a general package of spending cuts on childcare. The government currently funds 79% of the costs of organised pre-school care.
In 2005, 375,000 children went to a creche or childminder but by last year this had risen to 800,000, leading to a considerable budget overspend.
