National history museum needs rethink: Marijnissen
Plans to build a new museum of national history in Arnhem should be reconsidered now it has emerged the car park will cost €60m to build, more than the state’s contribution to the museum itself, former Socialist Party leader Jan Marijnissen said on Tuesday night.
The museum’s directors earlier warned that the car park would be too costly, Nos tv says.
It is not clear from the media reports why the new car park will be so expensive but the museum itself is being built on the open air museum car park.
Marijnissen told radio show Met Het Oog Op Morgen the cost of the car part is ‘reason to rethink again.’
‘Or the new cabinet must be willing to spend €60m on a car park, and I have my doubts about that,’ he said.
Marijnissen, who was the driving force behind the plan and is a member of the advisory council, had always backed Amsterdam or The Hague as a location, rather than Arnhem.
