Gay man on ChristenUnie MP list, because he’s celibate
The first gay man to be included on the ChristenUnie’s list of prospective MPs would not have been placed on the list if he was in a relationship, party leader AndrĂ© Rouvoet told a tv show on Wednesday evening.
Jonathan van der Geer is 41st on the party’s MP list and has therefore no real chance of actually being elected to parliament.
Van der Geer, the party’s press officer, told the Volkskrant last week his homosexuality is well known within the party but that he has chosen to go through life as a celibate.
‘We are committed to marriage as a union between man and woman,’ Rouvoet said. ‘That is part of our Biblical vision.’
The ChristenUnie, part of the outgoing government with six MPs in the current parliament, takes an orthodox approach to the Bible but is left-wing on social issues.
