Cancer care threatened by private clinic, say hospitals
Hospital directors in Noord-Brabant and Limburg provinces have urged health minister Ab Klink to reconsider his approval for a private cancer clinic in Boxmeer, because it will undermine their own operations, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.
The private Hansa Clinics company has been given the green light to build between six and eight radiation therapy units for cancer patients – a decision which will lead to overcapacity in the region, the directors say.
This, in turn, could threaten the viability of the hospitals’ own plans to expand their cancer treatment facilities.
The shortage of specialist staff to man all the units could also put patients at risk, they say.
