Heineken sold 11 million hectolitres of beer in 2009, making the Dutch brewer the biggest beer seller in western Europe for the 22nd year in succession, Reuters reports on Tuesday, quoting brewing industry research group Plato Logic.

Carlsburg is in second place with sales totalling eight million hectolitres.
The report says 2009 was a difficult year for western European brewers with sales down 2.5% and many beer drinkers switching to cheaper local brands.
