The start of this year’s Giro d’Italia cycle race in Amsterdam will lead to traffic deviations in the capital and on the race routes to Utrecht and Middelburg over the next few days, the transport ministry warned on Friday.

On Saturday the race will kick off with an 8.4 km individual time trial from Museumplein in the heart of Amsterdam and finishing at the Olympic Stadium. The event means a number of main road closures in the capital.
On Sunday the second stage will also leave from Museumplein, but this time for a 213-kilometre journey to the heart of Utrecht.
And on Monday the cyclists will start Zuidas business district and head for the city of Middelburg.
It is the second time the tour has started in the Netherlands: in 2002 the Giro d’Italia started in Groningen.
The prestigious Tour de France cycle race starts in Rotterdam this year.
