Fewer refugees in Europe
The requests for asylum in Europe last year reached 161,000, according to new figures from the European statistics office Eurostat. Of those, 16,100 were made in the Netherlands.
France was the most popular destination for refugees, followed by Germany and Britain.
In total, 62,600 people were given leave to stay in Europe, over 13,000 fewer than in 2008.
Almost 50% of requests for asylum in the Netherlands are granted, the figures show.
