City cleaning strikes may continue indefinitely

Add as a favourite source on Google Add DutchNews as a favourite source on GoogleStreet cleaners and rubbish collectors in Amsterdam and Utrecht want to continue their strikes until a deal with the employers has been reached, a spokeswoman for the Abvakabo FNV union told news agency ANP on Thursday.
Amsterdam refuse collectors went on strike on Thursday and had planned to continue for a week. But they have now decided to fall in with collegues in Utrecht who are on indefinite strike, ANP said.
Unions and employer representatives are due to meet on Friday to discuss the impass. The unions are demanding a 1.5% pay rise for bin men last year and 1.25% in 2010. The councils have offered a 1% of annual salary bonus instead.
