Queen’s Day honours go to 3,746 people
A total of 3,746 people have been awarded honours in the traditional honours list published on the eve of Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day).
Among the famous faces being honoured in this year’s lintjesregen – rain of ribbons – are tv presenter Albert Verlinde, business woman Sylvia Toth, and Kees Bleichrodt, chairman of Amnesty International.
Most people – 3,738 – were made members of the Order of Oranje-Nassau – which has six levels. The honour was introduced in 1892 for foreigners and the ‘lower classes’. Eight people were honoured with membership of the more exclusive Order of the Dutch Lion, which has three grades and dates to 1815.
Volunteers
Most of the honours – 3,637 – went to people who carry out voluntary work, reports news agency ANP.
The oldest recipient this year is a 92-year-old man who lives in American but has published a number of local history books about Geelen. The youngest is a 35-year-old man who does youth volunteer work.
