No unemployment money for for Amsterdam mayor
Former Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen will not claim the special unemployment benefit for former politicians because he left his job voluntarily, the Parool reports on Tuesday.
Cohen is entitled to claim 80% of his salary for a year. He earned around €10,000 a month as mayor.
‘I do not have to go on the campaign trail on the city council’s expense,’ Cohen was reported as saying. He quit the mayoral job in March to take over as Labour leader and head the June 9 election campaign.
The city council has agreed Cohen can remain in the official mayoral residence until he finds a new home but he will have to pay more rent than he paid while mayor. This may take some time because Cohen’s wife is in a wheelchair and a new home will have to be adapted to her needs, the paper says.
Former politicians are entitled to the benefits whether or not they leave voluntarily or are sacked. Nor do they have to actively try to find other jobs while claiming the cash.
