The Christian trade union federation CNV has appointed Jaap Smit, 53, as its new chairman. Smit replaces René Paas who has gone to chair the association of social services directors.

For the past six years, Smit has been chairman of the Dutch victims support association Slachtofferhulp. Before that he was a management consultant, religious education teacher and church minister.
