New Amsterdam local council coalition confirmed
Amsterdam’s new coalition local government is to be a mixture of Labour (PvdA), the VVD Liberal party and left-wing greens GroenLinks, the three parties agreed on Monday night.
The new coalition is due to present its full programme for the coming four years later on Tuesday.
Amsterdam has been run by Labour and GroenLinks for the past four years but the two parties lost support in the March local elections and needed to find a third party to join in. Labour has 15 seats on the 45-seat city council, the VVD 8 and GroenLinks 7.
The Liberal democratic party D66 emerged as the big winner in the local elections but pulled out of talks on forming a new coalition because of opposition to the appointment of Labour’s Lodewijk Asscher as acting mayor.
That decision led to the resignation of local D66 leader Ageeth Telleman.
