Minister drops plans to tighten mortgage rules for families

Finance minister Jan Kees de Jager has dropped plans to make banks give smaller mortgages to families than childless couples and singles following a storm of protest, Nos tv reported on Thursday afternoon.

The recommendation from the financial services authority AFM was heavily criticised by banks, consumer groups and MPs for being discriminatory.
But plans to fix the maximum size of a mortgage at 112% of the property’s value will go ahead, Nos said.
The AFM had said financial service companies should pay more attention to household spending plans and the household make-up when assessing mortgage applications.
