Fewer civil servants is most popular measure

A reduction in the number of national government civil servants is the most popular of the list of suggestions made to get government finances back under control, according to a poll by tv show EénVandaag.

Cuts in development aid spending is also a popular suggestion, as is a reduction in the size of the armed forces.
But the idea of increasing the health insurance own risk payment from €160 a year to €775 is dismissed by 68% of those who took part in the poll. Limits to the basic healthcare insurance package and a reduction in residential care provisions were also unpopular.
Twenty government committees published suggestions on how the next government can raise €35bn to reduce the budget deficit on Thursday.
