D66 manifesto: major reforms necessary
The Liberal democratic party D66 has made generating savings of €15bn over the next five years a central part of its draft election manifesto.
In addition, the party wants to increase the healthcare own risk charge from €160 to €375 per adult. The party also wants to set up a savings scheme for old age care, which would be similar to a pension scheme.
D66 also wants to take steps to encourage people with high incomes to leave rent-controlled housing and reduce the tax break on mortgage interest payments.
The state pension age would also be increased by two months a year until it reaches 67. It also plans to reduce unemployment benefit from a maximum three years to just one.
The party also plans to invest €2.5bn in improving educational standards. ‘We want to leave education undisturbed, which is why we are not planning any major reforms,’ party leader Alexander Pechtold said at the manifesto presentation.
