Cut spending on culture: tv poll

Six out of 10 people think the government should save money by cutting spending on culture and the arts, according to a poll by Synovate for tv programme Nova.

Top of the list for cuts is still development aid, but the arts and defence share second place, Nos tv reports. The more right-wing the voter, the more likely they are to back cutting spending on the arts and culture.
Of the €50 per head the government spends on culture, most should go to museums, the poll showed. Film is second on the popularity list, followed by festivals. The Nos report did not specify what sort of festival.
Only 3% of those polled felt the arts should be spared budget cuts altogether.
