VVD: cut spending by €30bn, reduce taxes

The free market Liberal party VVD will call for cuts in government spending of €30bn as well as tax cuts in its manifesto for the general election, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Tuesday.

Jan Anthonie Bruijn, who is in charge of the manifesto committee, told the paper a reduction in the number of civil servants and more efficient health service are at the centre of the spending cuts.
In addition, the party hopes to reduce income tax by one percentage point across all tax bands and cut corporation tax.
The VVD also plans to reduce the duration of unemployment benefits and put €1bn extra into education.
Other measures which will be included in the manifesto include: replacing the current system of student grants with loans, reducing the Dutch contribution to the EU, slashing the development aid budget by 25% and cutting the number of government ministries to between eight and 10.
