Job Cohen only candidate to lead Labour
Former Amsterdam mayor Job Cohen is the only candidate to lead the Labour party into the general election, party officials said on Wednesday.
The lack of other candidates makes Cohen’s appointment to the job at the party congress on April 25 a formality.
Cohen announced his candidacy last Friday, shortly after Wouter Bos said he was standing down.
In total, 500 people have come forward for inclusion on the party’s list of potential MPs. Among them are former junior justice minister Nebahat Albayrak who served as an MP between 1998 and 2007.
And local Amsterdam politician and former policeman Ahmed Marcouch has also put himself forward for the national party. Marcouch has made a name for himself with his tough line on juvenile delinquents.
