Britain tipped to take over in Uruzgan
British troops may be poised to take over from the Netherlands in the southern Afghan region of Uruzgan after the Dutch withdrawal, according to British newspaper Daily Telegraph.
The move will be part of a reshuffle of troop positions, the paper said.
A senior American officer with the international forces told the paper ‘the Marines will be the primary force in Helmand and Nimruz’ while ‘British forces will go to a combination of Kandahar and Uruzgan and Zabul’.
Last week it emerged the cost of the Dutch withdrawal from August will be €229m. The total figure and time scale depends on who is succeeding the Netherlands in the region, defence minister Eimert van Middelkoop said.
