Former immigration minister under protection

Former immigration minister Nebahat Albayrak is under armed protection after receiving serious threats, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

Security officials are remaining tight lipped about the nature of the threat and Albayrak would only say it is in connection with her previous job. She is one of 12 Labour ministers and junior ministers to step out of the cabinet at the weekend.
On the campaign trail in the Hague on Wednesday, her arrival was proceeded by an armed security officer, the paper reports.
It claims the threat could have come from both left and right, as well as organised crime. Albayrak was responsible for the amnesty for 27,000 failed asylum seekers, the end of automatic refugee status for Iraqis and Somalis and is a strong supporter of deporting illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes.
