Central bank president Nout Wellink will on Monday appear before the De Wit commission, currently investigating the causes of the economic crisis in the Netherlands.

In particular, Wellink is likely to come in for tough questioning over his role in the break-up of the ABN Amro banking group, Trouw reports on Monday.
On Friday, Henk Brouwer, a member of the central bank’s board, said he did not think the central bank was wrong when it gave the green light to break up ABN Amro through the takeover by a consortium of Fortis, Santander and Royal Bank of Scotland.
‘Knowing what we knew then, we would take the same decision,’ Trouw quoted him as saying. ‘But in terms of the future, I would not like to see the break-up of this kind of bank,’ he said.
Brouwer also refused to answer several questions from committee members, citing confidentiality agreements, Trouw said.
