Volkswagen again best selling car brand

Volkswagen was the best selling make of car in the Netherlands in 2009, the fifth year in a row the German brand has topped the list, the Telegraaf reported at the weekend.

Volkskwagen accounted for around 10% of the 387,699 new cars sold. Toyota was just behind Volkswagen in second place, with Ford third, Peugeot fourth and Opel fifth.
The total number of new cars sold was down 22% on 2008 because of the economic crisis.
Honda and Lancia were the only brands to increase their sales, up 21% and 12% respectively. The biggest decliner was Daihatsu, which saw sales down 51%. Alfa Romeo sales were down 48% and Kia’s 44%.
According to the Telegraaf, the bankruptcy of the country’s biggest car dealer Kroymans played an important role in Alfa Romeo and Kia’s fortunes. Kroymans was the official importer of the two brands.
