People over the age of 45 have been hardest hit in the latest round of job cuts, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.

Between October and December 2009, the jobless total rose to an average 410,000, or 5.3% of the working population. A year earlier, the official unemployment rate was 3.7%.
According to the CBS, the number of people without a job aged over 45 has risen over the past year by 42,000 to 141,000.
The government’s macro economic forecasting agency CPB expects the jobless rate to reach 8% by the end of the year.
