Rush hour calm despite wintry weather
There were no serious problems reported during this morning’s rush hour, despite the wintry weather, as the Netherlands gets back to normal after the two-week Christmas break.
The ANWB motoring organisation had warned of slippery conditions on the roads, but while there were problems on some minor roads, there were no problems on the motorways and fewer traffic jams than normal.
According to Nos tv, the dyke road between Enkhuizen and Lelystad was closed for a time because it was too icy.
There were also problems with fog in parts of the southeast.
The ANWB had extra staff on standby to cope with the expected surge in engine problems because of the cold weather. By 8.30am, the organisation had had 1,200 calls, compared with 150 to 200 on a normal morning, the Telegraaf reported. Many drivers reported flat batteries and frozen locks.
Temperatures fell to as low as -14 Celsius in parts of the country on Saturday night and weather experts say the big freeze is set to continue for the coming week at least.
