Jan Mans is Maastricht’s acting mayor

Former Enschede mayor Jan Mans has been appointed acting mayor of Maastricht, following Gerd Leers’ resignation over his Bulgarian holiday house.

Leers resigned on Wednesday night after a majority of the city council said they had lost their confidence in him. An official report found Leers had confused his public and private interests when he got into difficulty with the Black Sea resort villa.
Mans, 69, is a member of the Labour party and has also served as mayor in Meerssen and Kerkrade and as acting mayor in Venlo and Zaanstad. He will remain in the job until a new mayor is found. Mayors in the Netherlands are crown appointees.
