The Netherlands should bring in a point-based driving licence system for all motorists, the country’s most senior traffic official says in police magazine Blauw.

Koos Spee is in talks with police, driving licence authority CBR and public prosecution officials about bringing in a point system for driving offences. Newly qualified drivers have been given points for serious traffic offences in the Netherlands since 2002.
Spee said there are currently too many parallel systems involving the police, courts and driving licence authority to control driving behaviour.
Under a point-based system, drivers who have collected 10 points for traffic offences lose their licences. Points can be removed from the register if drivers take refresher courses or have an alcohol lock fitted to their vehicles.
