KPN to press ahead with glass fibre network

Telecoms company KPN is to press ahead with the regional roll-out of its glass fibre network and upgrade its traditional network in some places in the short term.

The former state-owned monopoly estimates up to 1.3 million households will have access to the glass fibre network by 2012 and that it will have between 600,000 and 800,000 clients.
According to the NRC, KPN is planning to introduce its glass fibre service on a city by city basis to make sure the cost – €1,000 to €1,500 per household – is justified.
KPN provides some 44% of high-speed internet connections in the Netherlands.
‘Glass fibre is the technology of the future,’ KPN board member Baptiest Koopmans told the NRC. ‘We expect strong growth in the number of services offered through this network.’
